ASCII vs UTF-8
ASCII defines 128 characters with 7 bits. UTF-8, used by nearly every website today, keeps those 128 codes unchanged and adds multi-byte codes for accented letters, other alphabets and emoji. So the binary alphabet above is the same in both. To convert whole sentences, use the text to binary translator or decode binary with the binary translator.
Frequently asked questions
What are letters in binary code?
Each letter is stored as a number and written in binary as one byte. Capital A is 65, which is 01000001; lowercase a is 97, which is 01100001. The tables on this page list every letter of the English alphabet that way.
Why do capital and lowercase letters differ by one bit?
ASCII was designed so that a lowercase letter is its capital plus 32. In binary that is a single bit: capitals start with 010 and lowercase letters start with 011, while the last five bits give the letter’s position in the alphabet.
Is this an ASCII binary table?
Yes. Letters, digits and the punctuation shown here have the same codes in ASCII and in UTF-8, so the table works for both. ASCII writes them with 7 bits; here they are shown as standard 8-bit bytes with a leading 0.
How do I spell a whole word in binary?
Write the byte for each letter in order, including 00100000 for every space. The text to binary translator does this for you and lets you choose spaces, commas or no separator.
